Central Asian Shepherd FAQ: Clear Answers for Prospective Owners

Is Alabai the same as Central Asian Shepherd?
Alabai is a regional name associated with the breed in Turkmenistan. FCI uses Sredneasiatskaya Ovtcharka, while American registries use Central Asian Shepherd Dog. The breed overview covers names and history.
How big do Central Asian Shepherds get?
The AKC owner guide gives approximate figures of 25.5–27 inches and 88–110 pounds. Larger adults occur; PetMD describes weight as 88–110 pounds or more. The size guide also gives the sex-specific FCI minimums and equipment measurements.
How long do they live?
PetMD gives an estimated lifespan of 10–15 years. The health guide covers preventive care, screening records and later-life planning.
Is the breed recognized by the AKC?
Not fully. The AKC lists it in Foundation Stock Service, which is separate from full AKC recognition. FCI and UKC also publish breed standards.
Is it suitable for a first-time owner?
The AKC owner guide favors experienced owners because of the dog’s independence, strength and guardian behavior. Assess secure spaces, visitor routines, training support and backup care before choosing. Start with the temperament guide.
Are they good with children?
They can be devoted to familiar family members. Adults should supervise interactions, protect the dog’s rest and manage visiting children. The family-fit guide covers household arrangements.

Can they live with other pets?
Ask about the individual dog’s history with dogs, cats and livestock. Plan introductions and separate food and rest areas. UKC describes suspicion toward unfamiliar dogs, so discuss visiting animals as well as pets already at home.
How much exercise do they need?
Plan daily walks, secure exploration and reward-based activity around age, health and weather. The AKC guide describes lower energy combined with endurance. The exercise guide covers route choice and a sustainable routine.
How should they be trained?
Use patient, consistent reward-based teaching, the approach AVSAB recommends, for lead walking, recall, settling, doors and handling. The training guide explains how to practice those skills.
Do they shed?
Yes. The coarse double coat sheds, with heavy seasonal changes. The grooming guide covers brushing, bathing and comfortable handling.
Are they hypoallergenic?
No. AAAAI states that no dog breed is truly hypoallergenic. Relevant allergens occur in skin flakes, saliva and urine. Read the allergy guide if someone in the household has pet allergies.
What health issues matter?
Discuss hip screening and the dog’s medical history with your veterinarian. Know GDV warning signs and keep an emergency plan for a large dog. The health guide covers records, growth and preventive care.
How much does a puppy cost?
Good Dog estimated U.S. puppy prices at $2,000–$3,500 on October 5, 2026. Ask the breeder for the actual price and inclusions. The cost guide adds equipment, food, veterinary care and a dated adoption-fee example.
Where can I find a puppy or adult?
Good Dog lists breed-specific puppy opportunities, and shelters or rescues may have adult placements. The breeder guide covers records and agreements; rescue and adoption includes an adult listing dated October 5, 2026.
